Pour en finir avec la coquetterie Making up for coquetry

series in mixed media, 2008

Investigating mechanisms of awesomeness.

‘I just want to hippily—uh, happily—in all honesty, I just want, that is one of my few unironic longings: I just want to be awesomely attractive and unironically hip and handsome.’

You see a gallery space. On the wall the following works have been neatly arranged: three variations of the same picture of Eric Schrijver wearing a pink sweater, one sketchy looking drawing and two black and white photographs on which you can make out people in some kind of studio setting. Near to the biggest black and white picture, to the right of your view, a closed-back headphone hangs from a microphone stand. It is connected to a CD-player which stands on top of a small side table, made of translucent plastic.

‘I am awesomely attractive and I frequent the handsome and the hip’ may not end up as the message of this work!

You see Eric Schrijver, wearing a pink sweater. This picture shows a three-quarter profile; Eric looks into the camera, serious and somewhat formal. You can make out from the lighting and the sharpness of the image that it was probably taken in a studio.

‘that I'm hip and handsome and awesomely attractive, and that I frequent the handsome and the hip, that’s not what this is all about’

You see the same image, but this time as part of the print-out of an e-mail. It’s the attachment in a mail responding to a call for an actor playing Van Gogh. The text of the e-mail is as follows: “I would say that you need me. I have reddish hair, a slight build, Dutch is my mother tongue, and I speak French fluently (albeit with a Dutch accent). Next to that, although I’ve worked as an actor, my main occupation now is as a visual artist which means I can very well relate to the sentiments of Van Gogh. Having said all this, I wasn’t planning on coming to L.A. in the coming time so if you’re interested we could maybe arrange a casting by teleconference. Regards, Eric Schrijver (Amsterdam, 1984)”
